Gloria Estefan Brings "¡Wepa!" to “Los Oprimidos”

Legendary singer Gloria Estefan gets the party started in her latest album “Miss Little Havana,” where she fuses her signature conga beats, dance music, and what she likes to call “nuclear merengue.”

Estefan, 54, linked up with R&B singer/songwriter Pharell Williams to produce her eighth studio album. She also collaborated with Pitbull, DJ Rehab, and her husband/manager Emilio Estefan.

“It’s a very Miami record,” Estefan told Fox News Latino. “Pharell, picked up the phone one day and said I have an idea, I want to run it by you.”

“Everything just fell into place,” she added. “We wanted to reflect all these different sounds of my past and also Miami.”

The Cuban born star says the first single “Wepa” is dedicated to “los oprimidos” the oppressed, those who work hard every day to survive.

“I think it’s a good moment to do dance music,” said Estefan. “We’re going through a lot of tough times in the world.”

“My job as an entertainer is to make you forget a little about everything that’s going on,” Estefan continued. “Hopefully this record will do it. It’s all about the fun.

In the music video for “Wepa” Estefan and her troop of b-boys and girls go all out on the floor, while the background gives a feel of Ocean Drive and Miami art deco.

“The ‘Wepa’ video is wild!” Estefan said. “I dedicated it to the people who work hard to make life easier for all of us. We’ve all been there at some point.”

Fame and money hasn’t changed the icon’s views of music.

“You’re not going to have any more fun [on the dance floor] whether you have five bucks or a billion,” said Estefan. “Music belongs to the people.”
