Famous sibling rivalries
A little healthy competition is good for the soul. As long as you win.
- Sibling Rivalry at its Best There are tons of famous siblings, but when it comes to battling it out big time, there's no better stage than the Super Bowl! On Sunday, Feb. 3, San Francisco 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh (right) and his brother, Baltimore Ravens head coach John Harbaugh (left) will take sibling rivalry to new heights as their respective teams compete for the NFL championship. Who do you think their parents are rooting for? (Reuters)read moreReutersShare
- Emily and Zooey Deschanel Celebrity siblings probably had the same fights that all brothers and sister have when they are growing up. "Mom, Emily is bothering me again!" "Dad, Zooey keeps pulling my hair!" But add to the normal scuffles sharing the same craft and going out for the same jobs and you have a whole new dimension to sibling rivalries. These famous sisters walked the red carpet of the 69th Annual Golden Globes together. Big sister Emily (left) was on hand to lend Zooey (right), who is three years younger, some encouragement as she was up for the best actress nominee for her Fox hit "New Girl." (She didn't win.) Emily has been on a hit show herself -- "Bones" -- for six years but has never been nominated for a Golden Globe. Check out which siblings are more successful and who struggles to measure up. - Casey and Ben Affleck Although both brothers were in "Good Will Hunting" (1997), it wasn't until "Gone, Baby Gone" (2007) when Casey (left) made a name for himself. The drama was directed by his older brother, Ben. While Ben Affleck (right) is a household name, Casey also has some big movies under his belt like the "Ocean's Eleven" trilogy and "The Assassination of Robert Ford." Like his big bro, Casey has also tried his hand at directing "I'm Still Here" (2010). (Reuters)read more
- Patricia and David Arquette Patricia and David come from a family of actors, so it's no wonder they both ended up in the limelight along with their other siblings, Rosanna, Alexis and Richmond. Patricia, who is three years older, starred on the NBC hit show "Medium" until 2011 while David did a stint on "Dancing with the Stars." (Reuters)read more
- Paris and Nicki Hilton The two heiresses have recently been seen frolicking around Europe together. While Paris loves attention and has tried to pursue both acting and singing, Nicky, who is three years younger, seems more interested in working behind the scenes with fashion labels. - Maggie and Jake Gyllenhaal With a director as a father and a screenwriter as a mother, Maggie, who is three years Jake's senior, and her younger bro both started out with small parts in their father's films. Maggie made her debut when she was 15, in "Waterland," and followed that up with "A Dangerous Woman" in 1993. Jake had his start earlier, in 1991's "City Slickers." These days, Jake seems to choose big budget parts like "Prince of Persia" and "Brothers" while his older sister goes for indie goodies like "Crazy Heart." (Reuters)read more
- Dakota and Elle Fanning Although it feels like she's been around forever, Dakota (left) is barely legal! Her look-alike sister, Elle, who is four years younger (right), got her start playing the younger version of Dakota's characters in both "I am Sam" and "Taken." Elle got her own leading role a few years later with "Reservation Road" in 2006. Hopefully their four-year age gap will prevent them from fighting over leads - and boyfriends - in the future. - Mark and Donnie Wahlberg Both these guys started in music, albeit in different genres. Donnie, (right) was part of the pop group, New Kids on the Block, while Mark (left) started the rap group, Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch. They both transitioned into acting in the mid '90s but it was Mark who truly shined with films like "Fear" and "Boogie Nights." Mark's star is still rising as he continues to get blockbuster parts, while Donnie has had roles in films like "Saw II" and "The Sixth Sense." He currently stars in "Blue Bloods" opposite Tom Selleck and Bridget Moynahan. Although these guys look ages apart, Donnie is only a year older than his action hero brother. (x17online/APread more
- Shirley MacLaine and Warren Beatty Most people don't realize these two are siblings since Shirley dropped her surname and used her middle name instead. Shirley started acting on Broadway and when her brother Warren saw how successful she had become, he decided to pursue a similar career. Both eventually became iconic Hollywood stars. Shirley is three years older than her Oscar winning brother. (Reuters/AP)read more
- Alec and Stephen Baldwin The Baldwin parents were busy. All together they have six kids including Alec (left) and Stephen (right). But in a family of stars, these two, who are eight years apart, have enjoyed the most success, especially Alec. While Alec just finished starring on the hit show "30 Rock," Stephen is better known for being a born again Christian who makes appearances on numerous reality TV shows. (AP)read more
- Matt and Kevin Dillon Matt (left) was a teen idol in the '80s, while Kevin (right), who is only a year younger, didn't become a household name until many years later. But it's like they passed the baton and kept on running. While Matt's career has significantly slowed down, Kevin's heated up after his most recent starring role as Johnny "Drama" on HBO's "Entourage." (Reuters)read more
- Ashlee and Jessica Simpson People still seem to know Jessica (right) better than her younger sister Ashlee (left) even though they both have had reality shows, high profile relationships and floundering singing careers. Ashlee came onto the scene once her sister, who is four years older, was already considered a successful star. But since then, their careers have gone in very different directions. While Jess makes millions on her fashion label, Ashlee hasn't done much to make headlines, except her high profile divorce from Pete Wentz. However, the younger Simpson got rave reviews for her portrayal of Roxie Hart in "Chicago" a few years ago. (Reuters)read more
- Britney and Jamie Lynn Spears Britney Spears (left) was a bona fide star by the time she was 17 and her little sister (right), who was 8 at the time, wanted to achieve the same success. Jamie Lynn started her career with acting instead of singing and landed the leads in "All That" and "Zoey 101" when she was barely a pre-teen. In recent years, Britney has reinvented herself with hit albums while her sister left Hollywood to live in Liberty, MI with her daughter, Maddie. (Reuters)read more
- Eric and Julia Roberts Eric got into the business way before his decade younger sis. One of Julia's first roles was in "Blood Red" in 1989, a film that her brother starred in. The young actress only had a few lines, but her career took off from there with "Pretty Woman" in 1990. Her older brother's career stayed slow and steady throughout the years, even while he battled with drug and alcohol addictions. Julia, as we all know, is a happily married mom of three. She's one of the highest paid actresses in Hollywood, reportedly earning $20 million per film. (AP)read more
- Haylie and Hilary Duff Usually it seems that the younger sister follows in her older sister's footsteps, but with the Duff sisters it's the other way around. Although they both started acting as young girls, it was Hilary (right) who became famous first with the lead role in "Lizzie McGuire" in 2001. After a few smaller parts, Haylie (left) got a recurring spot on "7th Heaven" in 2005 and people started to notice her too. Despite their different careers, these sisters are super tight. Hilary married hockey player, Mike Comrie and has a son Luca. Her sister, who is two years her senior, was often seen lending support during her pregnancy and joined her sister for prenatal yoga classes. - Luke and Owen Wilson All three Wilson brothers are in showbiz: Andrew is the oldest, followed by Owen and then Luke, who is three years younger. Andrew is the lesser known Wilson although he has appeared alongside Owen in movies like "Zoolander" and "The Royal Tenenbaums." It's hard to choose who is more famous - Owen (left) or Luke (right) - since "Old School" and "Wedding Crashers" are equally as funny. We'd like to see more of these two. (Reuters)read more
- Emilio Esteves and Charlie Sheen Having both started out in the '80s - Emilio (left) as a member of the 'brat pack' and Charlie (right) in movies like "Platoon - these two brothers looked like they'd eventually be neck and neck for roles. But their careers took very different turns. By the mid '90s Emilio started focusing more of his energy behind the camera and continues to direct and produce. Charlie, who is three years younger, starred on "Two and a Half Men," for eight years, during which he reportedly receives around $2 million per episode. (Reuters)read more
- Ali and Lindsay Lohan This one is a bit of a stretch, considering Ali (left) has yet to make any waves in Hollywood. But then again, she doesn't exactly have the best role model in the business. Nonetheless, these two sisters both aspire to be stars. Lindsay, who made it as an actress before her personal life eclipsed her talent, inspired her sister, who is seven years younger, to get into show business. But the only starring role Ali has had is on the reality show, "Living Lohan." In an attempt to branch out like her sister, Ali has released a few albums, none of which has had nearly as much success as her sister's releases. Hopefully she doesn't try to be like her sister in other ways and the younger Lohan stays out of trouble with the law. For more pics of Lindsay and Ali, go to x17online.com.read more
- Joan and John Cusack Joan and John both got their start in the '80s. They've starred alongside each other in several films including, "Sixteen Candles" in 1984, "Grosse Pointe Blank" in 1997 and "High Fidelity" in 2000. This brother-sister duo, who are four years apart, starred in "War, Inc." together and Joan says it's easier to work with him than any other actor. "Because itโs my brother... you are not worried. Youโre not distracted. You get to trust your instincts. My brother does not let me look bad. And if he looks bad, itโs his fault. I think in the big picture for me, it is the best time. I believe in John and his passion." (Reuters/AP)read more
- Shawn and Marlon Wayans The Wayans family of actors also includes Keenan, Damon, and Kim. It's one big family of talent! Shawn (right) got his start in his older brother Keenan's movie, "I'm Gonna Get You Sucka." He also made an appearance on "In Living Color" along with most of his other siblings. Later, the two enjoyed success on the sitcom "The Wayans Bros." Recently, Shawn is best known for his mockery of pop culture in the "Scary Movie" comedies where his brother Marlon, who is a year younger (left), also had a role. The two brothers also starred in the successful comedy "White Chicks" together. They sure keep it in the family. (Reuters)read more
