Elisabeth Moss‘ new role in “The Handmaid’s Tale” includes some incredibly awkward sex scenes with Joseph Fiennes and Yvonne Strahovski.
“Sex scenes are always f–king awkward,” the 34-year-old actress told a group of reporters on Friday at the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the Hulu show. “They’re always the worst. This is actually not as awkward because you have clothes on.”
Based on Margaret Atwood’s 1985 dystopian novel, the show is set in a theocratic, totalitarian society battling infertility by assigning handmaids to bear children.
Moss explained the filming was actually easier than usual because her character, a handmaid named Offred, is meant to feel uncomfortable during the “ceremony” — the name of the sex ritual in the fictional world.
“So normally when you do sex scenes, you have to pretend to like it,” she said, “[In ‘Handmaid’s Tale’] all the embarrassment and awkwardness can totally be on your face, so it was fine.”
The show is set to premiere on Hulu on April 26.
