Demi Lovato took home the “Rulebreaker” award at Billboard’s Women in Music luncheon at Cipriani 42nd Street on Friday, Dec. 11, where she told the crowd she’s been breaking the rules since first grade.
She recalled, “This boy came up to me and said, ‘Girls suck!’ I was all hyped up on the Spice Girls, so I punched him in the face and I said, ‘Girl Power!’”
Woman of the Year Lady Gaga teared up as she was giving a speech.

“It’s really hard sometimes for women in music. It’s like a [bleeping] boys club that we just can’t get into,” the “Born This Way” singer told a high-powered crowd. “I tried for so long and I just really wanted to be taken serious[ly] as a musician for my intelligence more than my body . . . And to be here today, being recognized for my songwriting and my legacy, it means a lot . . . I may not be a lot of things, but I can write songs and I can sing.”
Missy Elliott said, “I’ve been in this industry for [more than] 20 years. I stand here for all the women who may have been told you don’t fit the mold. You’re not good enough. You won’t make it. Look at me. I’m here.”
