Cuba Gooding Jr's civil rape trial called off as actor and accuser reach settlement

'Jerry Maguire' actor was set to go to trial on June 6 after being accused of forcible rape

Cuba Gooding Jr. and his rape accuser have reached a settlement the same day the case was set to go to trial, Fox News Digital can confirm.

The two parties filed the court document regarding the settlement at 10:24 ET, as jury selection was set to begin. "The case has been resolved," Edward Sapone, attorney for the "Jerry Maguire" actor, told Fox News Digital.

Gooding Jr. had been accused of forcible rape in civil court, and the anonymous woman had been seeking $6 million in damages. The judge previously ruled that the woman needed to reveal her legal name before heading to trial. However, the deadline of 12 p.m. Monday that was set by the judge came and went with no amended filing including the woman's name.

The plaintiff's lawyer, Gloria Allred, told Fox News, "I have no comment at this time."

The judge had ruled Friday that testimony from three other accusers could be given during trial. The women accused him of sexual assaults in 2009, 2012 and 2019.

Gooding Jr. was not required to attend the civil trial, and it was unclear if the actor would participate in his defense.

Jane Doe claimed Gooding Jr. sexually assaulted her in 2013 at the Mercer Hotel in New York City. Meanwhile, the actor denied any wrongdoing and claimed the sexual encounter was consensual.

The civil trial followed a criminal trial last year in which Gooding Jr. settled with Manhattan prosecutors. The actor avoided jail time and a criminal record.

The actor was first arrested in 2019.
