NEW YORK -- Filmmaker Gary Winick, who directed the film "Letters to Juliet" last year, died Sunday, The Hollywood Reporter said Monday. He was 49.
"He was suffering from brain cancer for quite some time, and it ultimately metastasized throughout his body," said Rosalie Swedlin, Winick's manager.
"What's remarkable is that after his first surgery, he was able to direct 'Letters to Juliet.' It was a battle that we thought he had won, and ultimately they just didn't get it all," she said.

Canadian-born Winick directed other mainstream films, including "Bride Wars" and "Charlotte's Web," but also produced several independent films through his production company InDigEnt, which he founded in 1999.
Swedlin said a memorial service was being planned and Winick's funeral will be private.
