Female mariachi singers have always been a minority, noticed more for novelty than their music. But today, a growing number of all-female mariachi groups are elevating the traditionally male-dominated genre and gaining acclaim.

That said, though, women still have a relatively small part of the guitarrón pie. And although women often sit in with all-male groups, it’s almost unheard of for them to become full members of those bands.
