Alexander McQueen became a fashion icon after just a few years in the industry. After working for traditional Savile Row tailors, he branched out on his own to become the chief designer at Givenchy in 1996 before moving to Gucci in 2001.
His gothic looks and dramatic shows made him a staple of the international fashion scene and a favorite of such stars as Sarah Jessica Parker (seen here as his muse at the Met Gala in 2006), Kate Moss, Lady Gaga and Cameron Diaz.
McQueen was even named Commander of the British Empire for his fashion leadership in 2003 by Queen Elizabeth II.
Just a week before London fashion week and on the first day of New York Fashion Week, McQueen was found dead in his London apartment at the age of 40.
