Kenya-based startup Mobius Motors has created a back to basics truck to service poor regions of Africa, where paved roads are scarce and affordable transportation alternatives limited. The tube-frame 4x4 was designed to use an off the shelf drivetrain supplied by a major manufacturer and do without side windows, air conditioning and other amenities to keep the price down to $6,000.![moibus2]()
The interior is stripped down, but features bench seating for as many as eight passengers that can be removed to carry up to 1,100 pounds of goods. Mobius is marketing the vehicle as a "business-in-a-box" for entrepreneurs hoping to bring commerce to the inner regions of sub-Saharan Africa.![moibus3]()
The simple vehicle was engineered to be lightweight, fuel efficient and cheap to repair, but rugged enough to handle tough terrain, offering nearly 14-inches of ground clearance -- more than a Jeep Wrangler. Unfortunately, despite featuring aluminum honeycomb bumper crumple zones for safety, the Mobius has no chance for export to the United States anytime soon.
