Tesla Model S now the quickest four-door in the world

The rocket man has built a rocket-fast car.

Elon Musk has unveiled the new Tesla Model S P85D, a 691 hp all-wheel-drive sedan that he says can sprint to 60 mph in a scant 3.2 seconds.

That's about a half-second quicker than a Porsche Panamera Turbo S, 707 hp Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat and all but a handful of two-door supercars.

It also has a governed top speed of 155 mph, and at 65 mph can travel 275 miles per charge, giving it a longer range than the less powerful two-wheel-drive Model S P85.

The price is $120,170 before tax credits, which you can spend on the $4,250 tech package that comes with a part time chauffeur.

Using a mix of sonar, radar and steroscopic cameras, it allows the car to autonomously brake for obstacles, steer down the highway, change lanes when you engage the turn signal -- even in traffic -- and adjust its speed by reading the passing speed limit signs, just like you do. Or should.

All new cars being produced are equipped with the hardware that makes this possible, and the fee is simply for a software upgrade. Further updates are in the works that could let the car to pull itself out of the garage and up to your front door all by itself.

Just don't expect it to do it in 3.2 seconds when it does.
