The Philippine government held another round of car crushing this week as part of its ongoing battle against illegally-imported vehicles.
Over $5.5 million worth of cars and motorcycles were destroyed at the customs yard in Port Irene under the watchful eye of President Duterte as heavy construction equipment was driven over them.
Among the luxury and sports cars were several Porsche 911s, two Ford Mustangs and a Lamborghini Gallardo, which was worth around $250,000 when it was new. There were also a few Harley-Davidsons and a custom chopper-style bike.
The government maintains that it must destroy the vehicles, rather than sell them to raise funds, because the used car market is rife with corruption and ends up benefitting many of the same people who were involved in the smuggling operations.
