Mercedes-Benz has unveiled a concept for an "Aero Trailer" that the company says can improve big rig fuel efficiency through a dramatic reduction in aerodynamic drag.
The full-size trailer has been fitted with a front air dam, wheel-covering side skirts, tapered tail extensions, underbody panels and a parallelogram-shaped rear diffuser similar to those found on racing cars. (Mercedes-Benz)
When hooked up to Mercedes-Benz' all new Actros tractor the changes contribute to an 18 percent reduction in aerodynamic drag. (Mercedes-Benz)
Tractor trailers currently consume approximately 45 billion gallons of fuel each year in the United States. According to Mercedes-Benz, the "Aero Trailer" design could improve fuel economy by approximately 5 percent, saving more 500 gallons of fuel for every 90,000 miles driven. (Mercedes-Benz)
