The 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray is picking up speed.

Speeds, that is. Two of them.

Chevy has announced that next year’s model will offer an 8-speed automatic transmission option alongside the standard 7-speed manual.

The automaker says the new quick-shifting transmission will deliver improved performance and up to 5 percent better fuel efficiency over the current 6-speed automatic’s 16 mpg city/28 mpg highway rating.

The 8-speed was previously confirmed for the upcoming 625 horsepower Corvette Z06 model, and needed only a few tweaks for duty in the 460 hp Stingray.

The 2015 cars should start showing up at dealers in September, but while today’s six-speed is a $1,350 option on the $53,995 2014 model, the price of the new transmission has not been revealed.
