Macedonian police say an employee at one of the country's biggest banks has been arrested on suspicion of stealing about 3 million euros ($3.1 million) worth of cash from the vault in the bank's headquarters.

Police alleged Wednesday that the administrator at NLB Tutunska Banka in Skopje surreptitiously removed the money, in euros and Swiss francs, over five days without being noticed by security staff.

The 40-year-old suspect, identified only as B.S., has been ordered detained for 30 days pending trial.

Police said the missing cash has not been recovered.

The bank's vault manager reported the theft to police on Monday at the end of working hours.
