ACAPULCO, MEXICO - MARCH 01: A Mexican federal policeman inspects an abandoned car on March 1, 2012 in Acapulco, Mexico. Stolen vehicles used by drug gangs are often found abandoned throughout the city. Drug violence surged in the coastal resort last year, making Acapulco the second most deadly city in Mexico after Juarez. One of Mexico's top tourist destinations, Acapulco has suffered a drop in business, especially from foreign tourists, due to reports of the violence. Toursim accounts for some 9 percent of Mexico's economy and about 70 percent of the output of Acapulco's state of Guerrero. (Photo by John Moore/Getty Images) (2012 Getty Images)
A federal judge in southern Mexico was gunned down after leaving his home on Monday.
According to several reports, Vicente Antonio Bermudez Zacarias, 37, a district court judge in Mexico, was shot point blank on the head.
He died en route to the hospital.
Luis María Aguilar Morales, president of the Mexico Supreme Court, released a statement confirming Bermudez’s death and called for authorities to investigate what happened.
“We have already been in contact with the competent authorities to immediately investigate this case and have it resolved,” Morales said, according to Aristegui Noticias. “Federal judges are people who devote their lives, their personal integrity, moral and physical, to administering federal justice and are required to have the security and tranquility that their independence guarantees.”
Bermudez has been a federal since December 2013. Before that he was a specialized judge and had at least one case involving the leader of Jalisco New Generation Cartel, Abigail Gonzalez Valencia. In March, the judge suspended the extradition of drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman.
Authorities have not released a motive for his death.
