Suspected jihadists kill 2 in attack on town in Mali near Burkina Faso border

BAMAKO, Mali – Malian authorities say at least two people are dead after an attack in southern Mali blamed on Islamic extremists.

Malian Lt. Col. Diarran Kone said Sunday that armed men opened fire on a police station in a town near the border with Burkina Faso.

A police officer and a civilian were killed in Saturday's violence in the town of Binh, he said.

It marks the second time in a week that suspected jihadists have struck in the region.

Jihadists at one time controlled the major cities in Mali's north until a French-led military intervention in early 2013. In the past year, the remnants of those groups have been striking further and further into southern Mali.
