Rescue officials in the Philippines say a tropical storm has left at least 53 dead in landslides and flash floods.

Most of the dead were in central island-provinces of Samar and Leyte, including 10 people in Tanauan, which was devastated by last year's Tyhpoon Haiyan. At least eight are missing and more than 136,000 have fled their flooded communities to emergency shelters.

Forecasters say the storm Jangmi has weakened and would dissipate off the western island province of Palawan.
