German prosecutors say they've charged a 26-year-old man with membership in a terrorist organization after he went to Syria to fight with rebel forces.

Harun P., whose last name wasn't given in accordance with privacy laws, was also charged with involvement in manslaughter and attempted incitement to murder.

Prosecutors said Thursday he traveled to Syria in September and joined the Islamic extremist group Junud Al-Sham. Prosecutors say he took part in a February operation to free fighters from a government prison in which at least two Syrian soldiers were killed.

He's also alleged to have unsuccessfully urged the killing of two people who wanted to bring their 16-year-old relative to Germany, because he feared she would inform on him.

He was arrested in Prague in April and returned to Germany.
