Jordan arrests pardoned Jordanian-American militant, no reasons given

AMMAN, Jordan – The father of a convicted Jordanian-American militant says the kingdom's police have arrested his son, who was jailed in 2004 for plotting a terror attack but then pardoned.

Mohammad Hijazi says police detained his son Raed in the street in Jordan's western city of Salt on Nov. 20 without giving a reason.

A security official confirmed the arrest Wednesday without elaborating.

Raed Hijazi, also known as Abu Ahmad, was convicted of plotting al-Qaida terror attacks during New Year 2000 celebrations. Initially, he was sentenced to death in absentia.

But in 2004, he got a new trial after he was captured and extradited from Syria. He received a 20-year sentence, but was set free two years ago by Jordan's king to give him what was described as another chance to repent.
