GOMA, Congo – Officials say fighting has broken out between Congolese government forces and the M23 rebels in the country's east.
Army spokesman Col. Olivier Hamuli said Tuesday the clashes took place around 2 a.m. in the area of Kanyamahoro. He gave no casualty toll and said calm had since returned to the area.
The M23 rebels accused the army of attacking their positions. Amani Kabasha said M23 will not be able to stand by indefinitely while Congolese troops threaten peace and security.
The M23 fighters launched their rebellion last year and briefly overtook the city of Goma last November. An upsurge in violence in late August raised fears of another attempt on the town.
Talks have resumed in the capital of Uganda between the two sides, though have made little progress.
