An airstrike that struck a school in Syria on Sunday has left at least 16 people dead, including 10 students, activists say, amid fears that the death toll will rise.

The strike hit a secondary school in Raqqa, a northern rebel-controlled city which has been regularly bombed by government forces, Reuters reports.

Videos posted by activists showed bloody and charred remains.

The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said the death toll from the airstrike was at least 16 – with 10 students among the dead – while some people are critically injured.

An attack by rebels on military bases outside Damascus on Saturday left at least 19 government fighters dead and dozens of others wounded, the group said, according to Reuters.
