Italian soldier killed, 5 wounded in Afghanistan

ROME -- Italy's military says one of the country's soldier has been killed and five others have been wounded in a mortar attack near a base in Afghanistan.

A statement from the joint chiefs of staff in Rome said the soldiers were attacked early Saturday evening in Gulistan. The wounded soldiers were flown by helicopter to a military field hospital.
Italy is participating in the NATO mission in Afghanistan.
