Three people were arrested in Shanghai for extorting drivers by deliberately riding their bicycles into cars, then demanding compensation, the Shanghai Daily reported Saturday.

The suspects confessed to the crimes, however Shanghai police say it is unclear how many drivers were ripped off over the past few months.

Police said the group extorted between 50 yuan ($7.90) and 300 yuan per incident. The most recent incident occurred Thursday when a car was passing another vehicle by using part of a bicycle lane.

Footage showed a cyclist suddenly turn into the car. The driver then got out of the vehicle, spoke to the cyclist, and eventually gave the cyclist something before driving away.

The footage then showed the cyclist waiting in the bike lane, before ramming into another oncoming car and falling to the ground.

Many drivers were willing to hand over cash to avoid a bigger penalty for driving in the bicycle lane, the report said.
