PARIS -- France's Foreign Ministry says it has summoned the Israeli ambassador over a recent airstrike in the Gaza Strip that injured the French consul there and members of his family.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Bernard Valero says the Israeli ambassador to Paris was summoned Wednesday morning to stress "how strongly we deplore the consequences of the raid," which took place overnight Sunday to Monday.

Valero recognized the need for Israel to guarantee its security, but said "it's important to prevent all harm to civilians, as well as to the French presence in Gaza."

An Israeli aircraft struck an unspecified site after Palestinian militants in Gaza fired a rocket at Israel Sunday.
