BEIRUT – Syria's state-run news agency says a nuclear engineer has been assassinated in a hail of bullets in the restive central city of Homs.
Engineer and university professor Aws Khalil is the fourth Syrian academic to be assassinated in Homs recently.
The chief of chest surgery at the Homs hospital who had treated wounded Syrian protesters in the past months was also recently assassinated.
Homs has been a hub of anti-regime protests since the uprising against Syrian President Bashar Assad began six months ago.
SANA reported Khalil's killing on Wednesday, blaming it on an "armed terrorist gang."
Syrian activist Mustafa Osso and others blamed the Homs deaths on Assad's regime.
