Guzman was arrested at the sheriff's office Monday and transported to the Broward Main Jail. The deputy faces "multiple misdemeanor theft charges and has been suspended with pay," the sheriff's office stated.

“Absolutely no one is above the law,” Israel said. “His actions are disgraceful, and in no way are a reflection of the good, hardworking men and women of the Broward Sheriff’s Office.”“I commend the work of the Public Corruption Unit for its commitment to hold deputies accountable for any criminal activity.”

The Broward County Sheriff's Office made headlines in February following the deadly school shooting at Majory Stoneman Douglas High School which left 17 people dead. In the wake of the shooting, the sheriff's office received heavy backlash for the handling of the situation, including the actions of Scot Peterson, the school's resource officer, who stood outside the building as the attack unfolded.
