An 11-year-old girl who authorities said was kidnapped after her grandparents were murdered at a North Carolina home was found in Washington D.C., police said Sunday.
Curtis Atkinson, the uncle of 11-year-old Arieyana Forney, was arrested after a brief chase, D.C. police Capt. David Sledge said. Officers initially tried to stop the vehicle but it sped away and crashed into another vehicle.
A witness told Fox 5 DC that police approached Atkinson’s vehicle with guns drawn and pried one of the doors open. The witness added that there was an additional person inside the vehicle with Atkinson and the girl. Police only identified the third person as female, the Washington Post reported.
Atkinson is suspected of killing his parents at their Charlotte home. The bodies were discovered after a fire was apparently set at the home.
Sledge said the Arieyana was taken to a hospital but appears to be fine.
