A Pennsylvania college is mourning the loss of one its students after he died from injuries sustained in a skateboarding accident on campus.
Swarthmore College sophomore Sam Jenkins was rushed to the hospital after he fell off his skateboard Friday afternoon on Magill Walk, which leads to the main administration building.
Students who witnessed the accident called emergency services and waited with Jenkins until help arrived.
Jenkins, a native of Rhode Island, died Sunday surrounded by his family at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
College President Valerie Smith described Jenkins as a “creative, joyful and gentle individual” who dreamt of running his own video game development studio.
“What I will remember most about Sam, having taught him in two classes this year, is his unbridled enthusiasm, infectious laughter, passion, honesty, fearlessness, curiosity, and empathy,” said Professor Rodney Evans in a statement released by the college. “I will miss him beyond measure.”
According to the college, Jenkins had recently attended a game developers conference and “returned feeling confident that he had truly found what he wanted to do in life.”
The details of Jenkin’s accident have not been released by the hospital or the college.
