Virginia State Police say they're investigating after a man was shot during a struggle with a Louisa County sheriff's deputy near a crash scene.

Police said in a statement that as a deputy arrived at the scene of a one-vehicle crash about 35 miles west of Charlottesville early Monday, the driver ran into the woods.

A few minutes later, the deputy found the man about a quarter mile away. During a discussion, police say the man charged the deputy. As they struggled, police say the man was shot once. Police say the 44-year-old man was taken to a hospital, where he is in stable condition.

Police say the deputy is white and the man is black.

Police say the deputy wasn't injured.

State police say they're investigating at the sheriff's request.
