A correctional officer was killed and another jail employee injured Sunday after they were attacked by an inmate at a south Arkansas county jail, authorities said.
The attack occurred Sunday afternoon at the Miller County jail in Texarkana, on the state's border with Texas. The Miller County Sheriff's Office said correctional officer Lisa Mauldin, 47, died at a hospital as a result of her injuries and another officer, Demaris Allen, was injured and taken to a hospital in Little Rock.
The attack occurred at 1 p.m. in the kitchen, KTSV reported, though officials did not immediately say what prompted the incident.
Authorities said the jail is now secure and on lockdown.
The inmate, who was not injured during the altercation, was not immediately identified.
A statement from jail officials obtained by Arkansas Online asked for "prayers for the families of these correction officers and for the agency as we mourn the loss of one of our own."
