HOLIDAY, Fla. – A sinkhole measuring at least 30 feet wide has forced the evacuation of several homes in Florida.
Pasco County Fire Rescue officials received calls Monday that the sinkhole had opened up beneath one house in Holiday, a suburban area near Tampa Bay. Firefighters evacuated the affected home, as well as four other surrounding houses.
No injuries were reported.
Chief Shawn Whited says they initially estimated the hole to be about 30 feet wide and 15 feet deep, but it was still growing.
Whited says the houses must remain empty until an engineer can inspect the hole either later Monday or Tuesday.
Whited says the sinkholes can usually be stabilized and filled in.
