An Arizona mom allegedly told cops she drowned her twin two-year-old sons because "nobody loved them and nobody loved her."
Newly released court documents show Mireya Alejandra Lopez, 22, admitted to killing the boys and said she attempted to drown another family member, but was stopped by a relative.
The probable cause statement released Monday also said Lopez said she takes medication for mental health conditions.
Police say Lopez is facing two counts of homicide and one count of attempted homicide. The third child, who was not identified by authorities, was not harmed. The identity of the twin victims was not immediately released.
Lopez's bail has been set at $2 million.
Lopez's mother discovered the twins' naked bodies in a bedroom. She initially thought they were sleeping but then realized they weren't breathing, the police statement said.
The grandmother yelled for help and began life-saving measures on the twins before hearing Lopez in the bathroom, where she saw Lopez holding down the third boy in the bathtub, according to the statement.
The grandmother "had to physically grab (the third boy) away from Ms. Lopez and pick him up to safety," the statement said.
Emergency personnel were called to the home at approximately 12:30 p.m. local time Sunday. Authorities told the Arizona Republic that by the time police arrived, the boys were on a bed and unresponsive. They were taken to separate local hospitals, where they were pronounced dead.
Avondale is a suburb of Phoenix, with a population of approximately 78,000 people. Neighbors told the Republic the home where the drownings took place is located in a quiet section of town.
