An investigation is underway after a Georgia police officer was killed in an ambush early Wednesday morning.

MyFoxAtlanta.com reports Fulton County Police responded to a report of a man wanting to commit suicide in Fairburn. When police arrived at the scene, the man fired shots and left the house.

Numerous calls about shots being fired in the neighborhood were made, investigators say. The gunman, who appeared to be drunk, was banging on doors trying to get into homes, police say.

As more officers arrived to search for the suspect, the man fired without warning and hit an officer. The officer was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital, where he later died.

The suspect was shot by officers during the ambush and was also taken to the hospital. Police did not give word of his condition.

The victim was a veteran officer with the Fulton County Police Department, MyFoxAtlanta.com reports. Police did not release the identity of the officer.
