WILLOW CREEK, Calif. – Authorities say a California Highway Patrol officer shot and killed a 17-year-old who attacked him with a machete.
CHP Capt. Adam Jager said Friday that the officer stopped to help the boy, who had hit a telephone pole in Humboldt County, when the teen attacked him. The officer sustained major injuries and is being treated in a Northern California hospital.
Jager says that the officer put up his left arm to block the machete; his hand and face were injured.
Jager says the officer shot the teen, locked himself in his patrol car and called for backup.
Another officer arrived later, finding the teen lying naked next to his car and acting erratically.
The Eureka Times-Standard reports that the teen died at the scene.
