PHOENIX – A section of northbound Interstate 17 in Phoenix's northern outskirts has partially reopened following an hours-long closure because of a fatal accident involving a wrong-way SUV.
The accident occurred at about 3 a.m. Monday near Anthem Way when a southbound vehicle collided with a tractor-trailer rig in the northbound lanes. The lefthand lane was reopened about four hours later.
The semi caught fire but the driver and a passenger got out safely. However, the state Department of Public Safety says the 35-year-old Anthem man driving the SUV was killed.
DPS spokesman Bart Graves says authorities consider a medical issue a possible cause of the accident.
