BUFFALO, N.Y. – The U.S. Coast Guard says five people have been rescued from Lake Erie after their sailboat sank near the shoreline in Buffalo.
Coast Guard officials tell local media outlets that the boat started taking on water around 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Outer Harbor, about a half mile south of the Erie Basin Marina.
A Coast Guard rescue boat from the Buffalo station arrived on the scene within minutes and pulled four people from the water while a tow boat rescued the fifth person. No injuries were reported.
Officials say the boat sank as strong winds from storms moving across the region produced high waves on the lake.
