A San Francisco coffee shop has barred patrons from discussing "annoying hipster topics," including chatting up their sexual exploits to avoid annoying neighbors and fellow customers.
The baristas at Bay Area shop FourBarrel put the apparent beat-down on beatniks with a list of rules taped near its back door.
Customers congregating in the alley, to which FourBarrel's back door leads, are not-so-politely asked to refrain from littering, clamoring, returning dishes, as well as impeding traffic.
The sign also includes the now-infamous precept pertaining to a certain subset of the American counter-culture.
"Please be respectful of our Caledonia neighbors by ... not talking about annoying hipster topics, or who you [expletive] last night.
"You shouldn't do that anyhow," adds the recently-posted sign, "but our neighbors can actually hear you."
The sign was first reported by the MrEricSir blog, whose other topics of interest include posts headlined: "A look behind Obama’s Mars Teleportation Scandal" and "Lisbon's Super Mario Bros. Obsession."
Time Magazine writer Dan Fletcher defined a hipster in July of 2009 as "the friends who sneer when you cop to liking Coldplay.
"They're the people who wear t-shirts silk-screened with quotes from movies you've never heard of and the only ones in America who still think Pabst Blue Ribbon is a good beer.
"They sport cowboy hats and berets and think Kanye West stole their sunglasses. Everything about them is exactingly constructed to give off the vibe that they just don't care."
The quote is referenced in the Wikipedia entry defining a "hipster."
Wikipedia adds that hipsters are known as people who have incorporated elements into their life from numerous post-war-era counter-culture movements like punk, the 1960's anti-war movement, as well the beat generation of the 1950s.
