A pair of 21-year-old Wisconsin students have been found after going missing during a hiking trip to a mountain pass on New Zealand's south island.

Alec Brown and Erica Klintworth, who are both studying at the University of Canterbury in Christchurch, were reported missing Saturday after failing to return from a hike in Arthur's Pass, The Press reported.

The pair, who had been expected to return from the hike at the start of the week, were located Sunday afternoon and were being interviewed by police.

An air and land search had been launched in an effort to locate the missing students, with a helicopter being used Sunday morning to scour the area.

West Coast Search and Rescue Coordinator Sergeant Sean Judd said the pair had not prepared well for their hike, which took place in freezing temperatures and heavy snowfalls.

It was not reported whether Brown and Klintworth were found by search teams at Arthur's Pass, or whether they had just failed to notify their friends that they had finished their hike.
