PASADENA, Calif. – The family of a college student who was fatally shot by police filed a claim against the city of Pasadena and five officers.
It alleges that poorly trained officers killed Kendrec McDade, who was unarmed when he was shot last month, the Pasadena Star-News (http://bit.ly/JPifg7 ) reported Thursday.
City Attorney Michele Beal Bagneris declined a request for comment from The Associated Press.
Police blamed McDade's fatal shooting on a 911 call placed by Oscar Carrillo, who claimed he had been robbed at gunpoint by two men.
Police said the call led officers to believe McDade was armed when they spotted him in an alley, and they opened fire when he made a motion at his waistband. Police said Carrillo later acknowledged lying about the gun to speed up the response by officers.
The claim filed earlier this month also states that race may have been one motivating factor in the slaying, but it doesn't elaborate.
McDade's family also has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit.
