Springfield police have arrested a man they say punched and bit off part of the ear of a coach after a youth basketball game.
Police say the man attacked the winning coach as the Catholic Youth Organization teams of fifth- and sixth-graders shook hands at the end of the game Friday night at the Holy Name school.
They said the coach needed treatment to reattach part of his ear.
Authorities identified the alleged attacker Monday as 34-year-old Timothy Lee Forbes of Springfield, the losing team's assistant coach. His lawyer Philip Lauro said Forbes pleaded not guilty and will have a dangerousness hearing Friday, when he'll seek bail.
Lauro said his client coached last year for the same team as the man he's accused of assaulting.
Forbes faces felony charges that include mayhem and assault and battery.
