Authorities say a 15-month-old upstate New York toddler has died after suffering a head injury when he was thrown onto a couch by his father.

Glens Falls police tell local media outlets that Jesse Smith died Wednesday evening at Albany Medical Center Hospital. Authorities say the child was injured Monday when 28-year-old Gary Lee Waite threw his son onto a couch, causing him to bounce off and hit his head on the floor.

Police charged Waite with assault. Authorities expect the charges will be upgraded to homicide counts because of the boy's death.

Warren County District Attorney Kate Hogan says the case will be presented to a grand jury.
Waite was being held in the county jail on $100,000 cash bail.

The name of his lawyer wasn't immediately available.
