PHOENIX -- An Arizona restaurant owner says the lion burgers he served this week to honor the World Cup soccer tournament were a bit hit with customers, but didn't go over so well with animal rights activists.

Owner Cameron Selogie says his Il Vinaio restaurant in Mesa had a waiting list of 100 people after reservations for the African lion burgers sold out.

But Selogie says the restaurant also has been flooded with calls from the media and animals rights activists, has had some protests outside and received a death threat.

Selogie was told the meat came from lions raised on a free-range farm in the U.S., but questions about the source have been raised.

The one-week big cat special ended Thursday night.
