The Washington Post reports that the FBI and the INS are trying to find about 3,000 Iraqis who came to this country for a visit, and now can't be found.

This is becoming something of an urgent matter, as you might imagine.

Most of the Iraqis who came here over the last decade — about 50,000 — came because they were fleeing from Saddam Hussein, which makes sense.

However... the 3,000 so-called absconders, who have a visa for a short time but never left, are still wandering America. They may have left already by some unusual means, but the main point is that we don't know where they are.

The FBI and INS believe that virtually all of the Iraqis living here are loyal to this country, not Saddam and that they have many reasons to hate him.

But of the 3,000 who can't be found, we can't be quite so certain.

So the FBI and INS are out there interviewing Iraqis, trying to track down these men who simply disappeared.

We all hope those people will come forward, and tell the authorities what they know. Perhaps some of the missing men can be found with help from Iraqis who want to be here and not in Iraq.
