I don't know about you, but one of the things I'm most fascinated by is time. How quickly it goes by and how much it changes.

What's got me thinking deep here is an old newspaper I had sitting around in my office. How old? One week. Just seven days ago.

There was no mention of Paul Wellstone. The Minnesota senator was still very much alive and still very much in the political fight of his life.

There was no mention of the D.C.-area sniper being caught either. He and his accomplice were still very much at large and still very much terrifying a region. One story criticized Montgomery Police Chief Moose as, "dangerously out of his league."

Those Chechen rebels hadn't stormed that Moscow theater yet.

And the World Series was dead even at two games apiece.

So much news in so little time.

One week later, life and politics go on.

Wellstone is gone. Walter Mondale is in.

The D.C. snipers are likely behind bars and Charlie Moose is a hero.

All in one week. Seven days. 168 hours. And it got me thinking just how quickly things change. How quickly we adjust. How quickly we forget.

We are so caught up in the here and now, that we fail to understand it is only here, only now.

It was a very different world a week ago. Some were alive and didn't know a week later, they would be gone. Some were panicked and didn't know a week later, they would be calm.

It's enough to make you want to appreciate what you have now. Knowing full well, in a week or less, you might not have it at all.
