Philadelphia Phillies pitching prospect Matt Imhof had his right eye removed after suffering a traumatic injury last week during a freak training accident.

Imhof posted a photo on Instagram of himself after the surgery and detailed the incident. The Phillies right-hander wrote in the post that a large piece of metal hit him in the head, causing a fractured nose, two fractured orbital bones and the loss of vision in his right eye.

Imhof wrote that doctors told him his eye had been "crushed like a grape" and that he would never regain sight in the eye. Despite losing his eye, Imhof wrote that the injury "could have been much worse ... I'm lucky that I didn't have brain damage."

Imhof was selected by the Phillies in the second round of the 2014 first-year player draft. The 22-year-old did not address in the post the likelihood of him continuing his playing career.
