Mazatlan, Mexico (SportsNetwork.com) - Tyler McCumber parred the first playoff hole on Sunday to defeat Jorge Fernandez-Valdes and win the Mazatlan Open.
McCumber, who has now won twice in three weeks after taking home the Ecuador Open title, fired a 2-under 70 in his final round, while Fernandez-Valdes carded a 4-under 68. The duo ended regulation deadlocked at 10-under-par 278.
It was a routine start for McCumber as he rolled in four straight pars from No. 1 at the Estrella del Mar Golf, Condos & Beach Resort. McCumber traded a birdie on No. 5 with a bogey on No. 6, but he responded two holes later with his second birdie on No. 8, getting him back into red numbers.
Making the turn at minus-1, McCumber made back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11, but he gave one of those shots back with a bogey on 13. McCumber had another answer with a birdie on 14. He dropped two shots after a double-bogey on 17, but a huge birdie on 18 forced a playoff.
Fernandez-Valdes made five birdies and just one bogey during regulation play, but his second bogey came on the first playoff hole, which wound up deciding the tournament.
Julian Etulain (68) and James Vargas (70) finished tied for third at 9-under 279, while Robert Rohanna ended alone in fifth at 8-under after a final-round 71.
