Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (SportsNetwork.com) - Brazilian midfielder Juninho Pernambucano announced his retirement from professional soccer on Thursday.
Juninho, who turned 39 on Thursday, has not played since injuring his right thigh with Brazilian club Vasco da Gama in November.
The Brazilian was a noted set-piece specialist, scoring 100 goals for Lyon and helping the French club to seven consecutive Ligue 1 titles. He also enjoyed stints with Al-Gharafa in Qatar and Red Bull New York in Major League Soccer and was a member of Brazil's 2006 World Cup squad.
