New Orleans, LA (SportsNetwork.com) - Jason Smith netted 22 points and grabbed 16 rebounds to help the New Orleans Pelicans to a 111-106 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons.
Ryan Anderson had 22 points and Jrue Holiday added 19 and eight assists for the Pelicans, who will host Memphis Friday.
With 11.3 to play in overtime, Tyreke Evans went to the charity stripe for two shots. He split the pair, but a lane violation on Josh Smith gave him another chance, and Evans drained it to put the Pelicans up 110-106.
Greg Monroe scored a game-high 28 points with 10 rebounds for Detroit, which will host Brooklyn Friday. Brandon Jennings added 25 points and Rodney Stuckey had 20.
"We lost track of him in overtime," Monroe said of Anderson. "With a guy like that, you can't give him one second to get that shot off. It's tough. We did a good job most of the game, but he hurt us in overtime."
To start overtime, Josh Smith netted a 3-pointer and gave the Pistons the lead for the first time since there was 8:25 left in the first quarter. An Anderson 3 tied the game 101-101 with 2:55 left in the extra session.
The teams traded baskets until another Anderson trey gave the Pelicans a 2- point advantage. After New Orleans regained the lead, Detroit would come within two points but failed to get any closer.
Detroit started the fourth quarter with a 9-0 run to tie the game 83-83. New Orleans went back up five with 6-1 run. Josh Smith made the last two baskets of regulation to tie the game with 1:19 to play.
Both teams came up empty in the final minute to force the extra session.
"Although we would have preferred to win in regulation, it was a resilient win for us," New Orleans head coach Monty Williams said.
The first 5:18 of the game saw five ties and three lead changes. With 4:31 left in the first quarter the Pelicans started a 9-2 run after a Jason Smith 18-foot jumper.
Detroit, however, responded quickly with 2:19 to play in the quarter. Stuckey scored five straight points to spark a 10-0 Piston surge to close out the first and make the score 29-28 New Orleans.
An Austin Rivers 3-pointer with 10:17 to play in the second quarter sparked a 10-3 run for New Orleans, which put them in front 41-33 with 8:08 left in the first half after the run.
New Orleans led by as many as 12 points before the Pistons closed out the half on a 7-2 surge to bring the score to 57-51.
In the third quarter New Orleans did not relinquish the lead and stretched it again to a 12-point advantage before finishing the quarter up nine.
