Kansas City, MO – The Kansas City Royals recalled second baseman Chris Getz and reliever Kelvin Herrera from the minor leagues prior to Friday's game against the Detroit Tigers.
Getz, the Royals' Opening Day starter at second base, was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on June 22 after batting just .214 in 47 games. The veteran infielder hit .313 with five doubles and nine RBI in 14 outings for the Storm Chasers, however, and is the lineup in the No. 9 spot for Friday's first game following the All-Star break.
Herrera also began the season in the majors before being demoted on June 25. The hard-throwing right-hander went 3-5 with a 5.20 earned run average and two saves over 29 appearances prior to being sent down, though he did strike out 33 batters in 27 2/3 innings.
The native Dominican earned a promotion by yielding just two runs in 18 innings and racking up 27 strikeouts in 12 games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas.
Kansas City made room for both players on the active roster by optioning infielder Johnny Giavotella and pitcher Everett Teaford to Omaha on Thursday.
Giavotella had served as the Royals' regular second baseman for most of July, but hit just .206 (7-for-34) with four RBI in 10 games.
