Van Gundy, Otis Smith out in Orlando

Orlando, FL – The Orlando Magic will have a new look next season, without head coach Stan Van Gundy and Otis Smith.

Van Gundy, who guided the Magic to the playoffs in each of his five seasons at the helm, was fired while president of basketball operations/general manager Smith and the organization "mutually agreed to part ways."

Orlando's 2011-12 campaign was largely overshadowed by the status of All-Star center Dwight Howard, who is eligible to become a free agent on July 1.

Howard was the subject of frequent trade speculation and sat out the end of the regular season and the playoffs with a back injury. The Magic finished as the No. 6 seed in the Eastern Conference and fell to the Pacers in the first round.

"The disappointment of getting eliminated in the first round of the playoffs these past two seasons played a primary role in our decision, as we feel our momentum towards winning a championship has paused," said CEO Alex Martins.

Van Gundy led the Magic to the Eastern Conference Finals in back-to-back seasons and a trip to the NBA Finals in 2009, where they lost to the Lakers in five games. He captured three Southeast Division titles with the team and compiled a 259-135 regular season record.

Prior to his time in Orlando, Van Gundy coached the Miami Heat for two-plus seasons. He owns a 371-208 career NBA head coaching record.

Smith, who was a member of the inaugural 1989-90 Magic team, served as director of player development for two seasons before being promoted to assistant general manager during the 2005-06 campaign. He was named GM on May 3, 2006 and took over as president of basketball operations in 2010.

The Magic were 299-177 during Smith's time as general manager.
